Curriculum Ties:
  •  Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.
  • Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning.

Plot Summary:
The magazine Seventeen is split into different parts. One of the major parts of the magazine is fashion. There are six different articles on fashion, ranging from what type of sunglasses you should buy if you want to look like your favorite celebrity to what patterns are not good for a bikini. There are also more in depth articles, like an interview with Jordyn Woods asking about her fashion opinion and stories about Olympic athletes like soccer player Julie Johnston .  The other major section of the magazine is devoted to beauty articles, which discuss different makeovers, cheap beauty products, and good habits for taking care of you hair. There are also some articles devoted to personal issues and interests of teens. Some of these included stories shared by LGBT teens and their struggles, tweets about over protective dads, and tips to finding good roommates. There is also some discussion about celebrities that are attractive to teens, along with their photos.

Critical Evaluation:
The audience for Seventeen is teenage girls. As such, both the subject matter and style of the magazine are directed to this group. The magazine writing features a lot of quotes, both from younger celebrities and teenagers, which is very informal, using words like “it sucks”. The phrasing of titles also supports this style of language, using short phrases that catch the attention, like “Prefect you Pout”.  Much of the magazine is made to encourage user response, with many stories included from readers which are also in this informal style. There aren’t generally any lengthy articles in the magazine, with there rarely being any page that has two paragraphs put together. Finally, there are also further materials to encourage reader interaction, such as quizzes and advice, which work to incorporate the reader into the magazine. These aspects work together to make the magazine a very informal and reader involved resource.

It also features an abundance of advertising, coupons, offers, and outside links. Though it does have some useful information related to health and college, it’s mostly comprised of lightweight fluff such as celebrity gossip, makeup trends, finding the perfect prom dress, and the hottest guys in Hollywood. There is frank and honest advice (from experts, editors, and real-life visitors to the site) about serious topics such as how to flirt and kiss, great pick-up lines, and knowing when you’re ready to have sex.
